What is Linux?

Linux is one of the most popular open-source operating systems in the world. It’s based on the Linux kernel, which was first released by Linus Torvalds in 1991. It has a lot of different distributions (or “distros”) such as Ubuntu, Debian, Red Hat, etc, each tailored for different needs and preferences.

Key characteristics:

  • Open Source: Linux is freely available for anyone to use, modify, and distribute.
  • Multi-user: Multiple users can use the system simultaneously without interfering with each other.
  • Kernel-based: The core of the operating system that manages hardware and system resources.
  • Versatile: Can be used on a wide range of devices, from servers and desktops to smartphones and embedded systems.
  • Security: Known for its robust security features and regular updates.
